This school year the Oak Hills High School counseling team has a addition. Analina Sandoval, from Granite Hills High School in Apple Valley, is the new Senior counselor for the Class of 2019. Sandoval has been counseling for 4 years and is now she is part of the bulldog staff.

After high school, Sandoval went straight to California State University San Bernardino where she earned her Bachelors and Masters degree. Sandoval did not want to be a school counselor when she got out of high school. She first began with psychology and later learned she wanted to become a counselor to help students with their experiences.

“I knew I liked working with students and learning from past experiences in high school. I wanted to help lead,” states Sandoval.

Daily routines for her role include graduation checks, counseling, communication with parents and students, and personal counseling if students need to talk. Outside of her daily routines Sandoval’s interests include going on hikes, hanging out with her husband and her two kids who are 2 years old and 7 months old. She also enjoys watching movies during her free time.

Sandoval’s childhood has helped lead her to her journey as a counselor. Her family has been very supportive and they have always encouraged her to do well in school. Growing up, her family and her school crowd that she would hang out with, brought about her interests.

Sandoval’s parents gave her a piece of advice that still sticks with her as of today.

“If you want a good life you have to work hard,” Sandoval comments on advice that her parents have given her.

Counseling for Sandoval is not always easy. Especially with students who are stubborn and do not realize the help that is being offered in front of them.

“Hardest part is wanting to help and they don’t see it as that,” Sandoval comments on certain struggles of her daily job.

Behind the struggles of counseling and hard work, OHHS counselors want their students to be successful and to be hard workers.

“Push and challenge yourself and you will see what you can really accomplish,” states Sandoval.
