People are usually too busy talking to each other to notice how beautiful they are. Eyes are one of the first things you look at when analyzing someone’s face. You may not know, but the person you are talking to could have a rare eye disease or just extraordinary eye colors. Although people may have the same color eyes as someone else, no two eyes are exactly the same.

Everyone has a distinct eye color from each other.

The most common color found in eyes is brown. In fact 60% of the world has brown eyes. The next prominent color is blue. Around 19% of the world has blue. Hazel eyes take up 7% of the population, grey eyes take up 3%, and the last 2% are green.

“Grey, green, and blue eyes have a greater risk of getting cancer because they are a lighter color,” says Raelene Wolfe, the school nurse at OHHS.

There is a disease called Heterochromia iridis where it causes both eyes to be different colors, or one eye to be a mixture of colors. This disease is not common. In fact, only 1% of the population has this disease. One of the most famous people who had this disease was David Bowie who was an actor and singer. Henry Cavill, who plays Superman, also has this disease in his left eye. Even animals can get this disease such as “Venus the Cat” from Instagram.

“Something I find interesting is how parents have brown eyes but the baby has blue eyes,” says Leslie McGhee, a science teacher at OHHS.

If two parents have blue eyes their baby still has a 20% chance of having brown eyes. Brown eyes are such a dominant quality that even if no one in the family has brown eyes, the baby will still have a chance of brown eyes. The chance of your baby having the same colored eyes as you is like playing a wheel of fortune game. When most babies are born, there eyes start off blue. Until they are about three months old, their eyes have no pigmentation because that forms later.

Some people are born unable to see. Blindness can be caused by a serious head injury that messes up the connection between your brain and your eyes. Others forms of blindness can be caused by certain diseases. If there are cases of blindness in your family, the chances are high that you will get it to.

At OHHS, we have a diversity of eyes. Here is a slideshow of some eyes that we have at Oak Hills High School.

Good article. I enjoyed the facts. The art was excellent and the photos showed good examples of eye color. I’m looking forward to seeing more articles from Aurora.
