Halloween marks the beginning of fall festivities! It is when you get into the holiday spirit. One of the most popular things to do is pumpkin carving. This is a fun activity plus they make eerie decorations. Jack O’Lanterns originated in Ireland many many years ago. It is from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack, he was a name who truly lived up to his name. Due to of Jack’s stinginess he would trick many people, including the devil. Jack would trick the devil into making him promise that he would not take him to hell. Eventually when Jack did die he was not allowed into the underworld or into heaven. As the legend goes, the devil sent Jack to wander into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved out turnip and has been roaming Earth ever since. The Irish would call him “Jack of the Lantern” which then turned into “Jack O’Lantern”.
