In the world of high school sports at the clamour of the roaring crowds, maturing athletes find a place of solidarity within themselves to form a reputable name. Whether it is on the basketball court or on the volleyball court, sacrifices are made through all the days, all the hours to add a reputation to the number they wear come gameday.

The reputation of the jersey number comes after the choice, and the choice often comes early on.

Zion Brown, a varsity football player from Oak Hills High School states, “I used to have the the number 29 in Pop Warner because my step dad told me to get it but it was also the number of Eric Dickerson from the NFL so I became pretty attached to that number.”

Although Zion had humble beginnings under the number 29, he’s made a new name for himself through his high school career as a very respected linebacker with the number 20.

Football is not the only sport that holds this tradition close, sports such as softball does too. It does not always take a role model athlete to find that special number- some just find what they like and go with it. OHHS softball player Ashley Lugo was just ten years old when she found her number ten, which represented her age, and decided she wanted to stick with it on her jersey all the way to her senior year.

She states, “I only chose it because I was ten years old at the time but now it just reminds me of the good days when everything was easy and it takes me back to my first year in all stars which was also the same year I fell in love with the game.”

Young, developing athletes often have their role model players to look up to, to watch and learn from and even aspire to be. Iconic professional sports figures such as Kobe Bryant, Derek Jeter and Tom Brady will go down in history by both their names and the numbers on their jersey; young athletes from all over have a burning ambition to follow their footsteps and end their career in similar ways with their stories to tell.
