Currently, tutoring for students is provided here at Oak Hills High School in room B-40. This is available Mondays through Thursdays after school, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunch. To have tutoring that is more focused on individual subjects, additional tutoring has been expanded to room C-15 on Mondays and Wednesdays at lunch and after school. Tutors include AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) and CSF (California Scholarship Federation) students with good grades, AP (Advanced Placement), and honor classes.

“[The tutors] have A’s and B’s, hardly any C’s,” said AVID, CSF, and Algebra 2 teacher Stacey Canchola, “It’s pretty awesome.”

Tutoring in room C-15 is supervised by Mrs. Canchola. The idea of expanding tutoring started with her, then she gave the idea to her students. The students then set it up themselves.

“We’re only a few weeks old,” said Mrs. Canchola. “We hope that by the end of the year we have more kids coming in [for tutoring].”

Each tutor specializes in a subject and they help tutor students who need help. Miguel Gallardo, a CSF Oak Hills High School junior and tutor, specializes in pre-calculus. Gallardo explains, “I try to tutor someone at least once a week. It feels good when I learn something and teach it to someone else.”

Deema Nasla, a CSF Oak Hills High School sophomore and tutor, specializes in mathematics and chemistry. She said, “I feel good when other students understand the material.” In order to get the right type of assistance, students who come in should explain what they need help with instead of just saying “I don’t get it.”

The tutors help with what students are struggling to understand. “To know what their question is the students have explain what they don’t get,” said Deema.

The tutors specialize many topics ranging from math, English, foreign language, and many other subjects. If you need help in any topic, go to room C-15 on Mondays and Wednesdays at lunch or after school. The tutors will be willing to help.
