FHA-HERO. The average student has probably seen them at OHHS’s Club Fair selling some really good SpiderWeb Cupcakes or Cake Pops that they made themselves- don’t worry they had their Food Handlers Cards, which means that the food was made in a safe manner. But there is more to the club then meets the eye.

Let’s start with the title of the club. FHA-HERO stands for “Future Homemakers of America-Home Economics Related Occupations.” Pretty long title, is it not? Maybe, but it isn’t the title that pulls its members into the club. What really brings the members in is all the fun that they have participating in all the activities that they do.

To club adviser Mrs. Sarah Webber of FHA-HERO, “It is really all about building leaders for the future, career opportunities, community service and family networking.”

Member Melanie Martinez, senior, also adds that,”It’s a great way to meet new people and build more confidence.” Which is exactly what the members gain and do within the club. Lately, it has been a lot of community service, for example, they sent out homemade Valentine’s day cards to the elderly, Christmas cards to St. Mary’s Hospital, Hesperia Clean Up Day and much more.

Along with the community service, FHA-HERO club members are also able to participate in competitions that have multiple divisions for members to participate in. Alicia Chavez, a senior, is participating in the culinary division of the competition, where she will be expected to bake a cake that is vacation theme. These competitions range from regional, state and national levels where they can gain some career experience and win some awards depending on their placement. Simply placing high up, would boost up anyone’s confidence in themselves and their division. Plus the competing members get to wear these nice red blazers that the club officers get to wear at the club meetings, which is a nice bonus to the mix.

If you’re interested in joining FHA-HERO and want to learn more about it, they have weekly meetings on Wednesday at lunch in Mrs. Webber’s room, B-19. Or you can check out the FHA-HERO website for more information.
